Agrochemical (Pesticide) Use

Because of the heavy incidence of cocoa blackpod disease and capsid insects, producers are obliged to spray fungicides and insecticides. The mean fungicide purchase reported per household was 110 000 FCFA, which buys approximately 170 packets of Ridomil the most commonly used fungicide. At a rate of 30 packets per ha this is the appropriate amount for one treatment of 5.7 ha. In Cameroon the fungicide is commonly mixed with the insecticide. It is estimated that one person with a backpack sprayer can apply fungicides/insecticides to approximately 0.5 ha per 6-hour work day. Thus the average Cameroonian producer would require 11 person days for applying pesticides. Other than fungicide and insecticide, an extremely limited number of producers applied herbicides (0.5% of producers).
